Métis Nation BC – Northern Health Letter of Understanding (LOU)
Métis Nation British Columbia, Northern Health and the 11 Métis Chartered Communities in the Northern region are working together to improve access and equity to culturally safe care for Métis. In 2020 a Letter of Understanding (LOU) was signed forming the foundation for collaborative efforts to enhance Métis health and wellness outcomes in the North. The LOU constitutes a framework in which MNBC and NH can work together to increase the influence of Métis in decisions related to health services that impact them.

MNBC-NH Métis Health and Wellness Plan

The Métis Nation British Columbia – Northern Health Métis Health and Wellness Plan is aimed at fostering a comprehensive and collaborative approach to improving Métis health outcomes across the North. This plan is a strategic roadmap that builds on the existing partnership between MNBC, NH and local Métis Chartered Communities. Guided by a commitment to culturally safer and equitable care for Métis, this plan identifies specific areas for change, outlines joint actions and envisions transformative outcomes over the next five years.
The Métis Health and Wellness Plan marks a significant step toward achieving health equity for Métis in each health region. Grounded in collaboration, cultural wellness and a commitment to Métis-specific approaches, these plans serve as a model for transformative change in the provincial healthcare landscape. Map of Métis Chartered Communities
There are 11 Métis Chartered Communities in the North that are serviced by Northern Health. Métis Chartered Communities are volunteer-run and incorporated organized associations that advocate for and support citizens and self-identified Métis through a variety of programing and funding opportunities. Each president or leader represents their community by serving on the Métis Nation Governing Assembly, the governing legislative body of MNBC. These communities help members connect to each other and are the heart of the Nation, providing opportunities for Métis culture to flourish and be passed on (Métis Nation British Columbia, 2021).
